Mayerson Northern Kentucky Service Learning Initiative

Introductory Service Learning Training:
This hour and a half training answers key questions about service learning. Participants will leave this training with written resources and a presentation that succinctly explains the form, function and goals of service learning in the school setting. In addition, participants explore how service learning benefits their students, school and community; review sample projects; and learn how Children Inc.’s Mayerson Service Learning Initiative will assist them in the planning, implementation, and demonstration of student service learning at their school.

Make-It-Take-It Training:
Make-It-Take-It trainings are one hour of interactive and collaborative project building. This workshop is for 8 to 15 participants that have an understanding of service learning but still want help building a high quality service learning experience. At the end of the hour each participant will take away a group generated project and small group or individual project maps. These maps include all the elements of the PAR-D model and assist the teacher and students in carrying out a high quality service learning project.

 ADVANCED TRAINING:

Community Service to Service Learning:
This training explores the similarities and differences between community service and service learning. Video and discussion examples within the workshop demonstrate how intentional planning can transform a community service project into service learning, by focusing on the 8 effective practices. As a result, the outcomes make for deeper learning within the community served.

Social Entrepreneurship:
A social entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to affect social change. Through service learning, many projects’ desired outcome is a monetary donation to support a community need. This training provides strategies to engage students in opportunities to develop creativity and innovative problem solving while learning ways to address social issues through micro enterprises. Within these projects students understand principles of financial literacy and social entrepreneurship. Examples of previous social entrepreneurship projects and potential partner organizations are provided to participants.

Reflection Methods and Activities:
Reflection is important before, during, and after the project to allow students an opportunity engage with the planning and evaluation of the project. In doing so, students are able to personalize their learning experience and explore social issues from many points of view. But how do we incorporate this naturally and creatively? This training presents examples of reflections exercises and activities that focus on the multiple intelligences to allow a dynamic way for students to reach those “AHA” moments and recognizes their own abilities to give back.

Reflection & Process Monitoring:
The Reflection and Process Monitoring workshop provides methods to integrate reflection and process monitoring throughout one’s service learning project. Integrating these two practices using periodic assessment tools measures student learning as well as productive ongoing feedback to students and teachers striving for stronger outcomes to their service learning experiences.
